SRNA’s Family Camp 2021 Focused on Art & Film with Grace Fisher

For the second year in a row, SRNA’s Quality of Life Camp went virtual due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns. We gathered online Friday, September 3, and Saturday, September 4 with our very special guests, community member Grace Fisher and her parents, Bill and Debbie. This awesome weekend was designed for families with children diagnosed with Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, Acute Flaccid Myelitis, MOG Antibody Disease, Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder, Optic Neuritis, and Transverse Myelitis. The camp was also open to clinicians and their families.

Our camp activities kicked off with a very special screening of the award-winning documentary, “Amazing Grace”. The film relayed the experiences of our special guest, Grace Fisher, who was diagnosed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis at the age of 17. The documentary detailed both the obstacles Grace has faced and the accomplishments she has achieved since her diagnosis. After the film, Grace and her parents graciously hosted a Q&A and conversation session with our camp guests.

On the second day of camp, we learned about the Grace Fisher Foundation and its commitment to connecting children living with disabilities to the arts. Campers were treated to a very special art session led by Grace herself. Everyone had a lot of fun chatting, creating, and painting their own unique underwater sea creature. We would like to thank Grace, Bill and Debbie, and the Grace Fisher Foundation for helping us create a memorable virtual camp experience for our families.

We are very excited to announce that plans are now in the works for an in-person SRNA Quality of Life Camp for 2022! Our tentative dates for this year’s in-person camp are Tuesday through Saturday, July 26 – July 30, 2022. We will announce all the details, including COVID-19 safety protocols, soon. If you’re interested in camp, please be sure you’re signed up as a member to receive emails from SRNA. We are looking forward to being able to safely gather in person this year! If you have any questions about camp, please email Rebecca Whitney at [email protected].
