Walk-Run-N-Rolls End 2024 on a High Note

This fall, the Siegel Rare Neuroimmune Association (SRNA) ended its 2024 Walk-Run-N-Roll season with two events: one in Houston, Texas, and the other in Norwalk, Connecticut. After hosting three events this spring, we took a short break for the summer but were excited to get back on the road and continue to celebrate 30 years as an organization with our community members and their families.

On Saturday, October 5, we headed to Houston, where volunteer host Angela Jackson was excited to return to James Driver Park for the second time. “First of all, I want to thank SRNA for trusting me to organize the 2024 South Central Walk-Run-N-Roll Houston event,” shares Angela. “My daughter Candace told me the work I’m doing is my new purpose in life. I agree with her. Bringing members of the SRNA community together to socialize with one another warms my heart. I’m especially proud of the volunteer speakers. It takes a lot of courage to stand in front of attendees to tell your story. I look forward to continuing my journey as a SRNA Peer Connect Volunteer.”

During the event, there were three community speakers who shared their stories and connection with SRNA. Hannah Stadler told attendees about how Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) had impacted her life, and the way that being a volunteer at SRNA’s family camp had been a positive part of her recovery. We learned about the path to a diagnosis of MOG Antibody Disease (MOGAD) when Judy Maranca told her story. Finally, with encouragement from her sons, Rachel Scott spoke, describing the way that Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) impacted her family after her son Braden was diagnosed.

Over 30 people, including family, friends, and other community members, showed up to support SRNA, celebrate, and help raise awareness. With their support, the event raised over $3,000. You can view event photos and read more about the 2024 South Central Walk-Run-n-Roll here.

New volunteer Andreas Melitsanopoulos has wanted to host an event for SRNA in his hometown for several years. On Sunday, October 13, Andreas’ vision finally came to life. On a beautiful sunny morning at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk, Connecticut, 70 people showed up to support Andreas and the rare neuroimmune disorders community. Thanks to their generosity, the event raised over $7,490.

Andreas and his wife Ella share, “Hosting a Walk-Run-N-Roll was an incredible experience. Those who are diagnosed, and families that are impacted, know just how isolating these rare diseases can be. With the help of SRNA, we got to remind families that they are not alone in their fight. It was an honor that we will forever cherish.”

The event was full of life and community, complete with a local face painter for the kids, stories from those diagnosed and their family members, and a birthday cake surprise for Andreas’ mother. You can view event photos and read more about the 2024 Northeast Walk-Run-n-Roll here.
