About Our Guest Speakers
Dr. Philippines Cabahug
Philippines Cabahug earned her B.S. in Physical Therapy at the University of the Philippines in 1994, and her Medical Degree at St. Luke’s-WHQ Memorial, Philippines in 2000. She completed a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency at the Philippine General Hospital in 2005. She was awarded a UN scholarship to pursue her Posgraduate Diploma in Gerontology and Geriatrics at the University of Malta in 2004. She completed her second PM&R residency in 2012, and a fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2013.
During her residency training Dr. Cabahug received numerous awards including the Hopkins Healer Award for Outstanding Resident in 2010 and 2012, and the Frank L. Coulson Award for Clinical Excellence in 2012. She was chief resident during her senior year. She was actively involved in the PM&R team that won first place at the Johns Hopkins Achieving Competence Today (ACT) Program, on “Omissions at Discharge, A Quality Improvement Project.”
Presently, Dr. Cabahug practices at the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at the Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI). She is the director of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSK-US) at KKI. She runs two MSK-US clincis at KKI – a musculoskeletal diagnostic clinic and an ultrasound-guided intrathecal pump access clinic.
Dr. Cabahug has worked on several publications regarding Lean Six Sigma Quality Improvement Project focused on improving discharge paperwork. She is also an online contributor to “PM&R Knowledge Now,” the online resource of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Cabahug is actively involved in medical education as an instructor at the Department of PM&R at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She instructs medical students, PM&R residents, and fellows in the fields of SCI and MSK-US.
Paula Hardeman, MPAS, PA-C
Paula Hardeman is one of the Physician Assistants in the Neuroimmunology Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science and received her Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree in 2004 from UT Southwestern. After completing PA school she worked in a Primary Care/Internal Medicine office where she was able to implement many programs to help patients learn about and better manage their chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma. In February 2010 Paula joined the Neuroimmunology Program. Not only is she involved in the evaluation and treatment of patients with demyelinating disorders, but she also develops and coordinates various research projects and health/wellness programs.
